🏔From the High Sierra to the New River Gorge

Planning, hiking, and learning with a little AI help

Hey Campfire Embers!

Last week, one of our embers (hi Chris 👋) asked a question that made me pause:

“How many people actually reach out after reading the newsletter?”

I had to admit — not very many. 😅

But Chris had a great suggestion: “Why not give people a reason to engage?”

So here’s what we’re doing — and yes, there’s a little incentive.

🔥 Community Giveaway:
If you’re planning a trip anytime in the next 12 months, hit reply and tell us where you’re headed. That’s it!
It can be a full-blown cross-country loop, a weekend in the mountains, or just a dream destination you’re hoping to make happen.

➡️ Reply by Friday, November 7, 2025, and you’ll be entered to win a $10 gift card (we’ll announce the winner in next week’s email).

We just want to hear what adventures you’re dreaming up — and hey, your idea might even inspire someone else in the ember crew.

Chris, for example, is eyeing a Hut-to-Hut Hiking Challenge in the High Sierra Nevada. It’s a serious adventure — remote huts, rugged peaks, and no Starbucks in sight. We did a little digging and sent him an itinerary idea built with RV Travel GPT, and honestly, it came out pretty darn good.

🤖 Pro tip: RV Travel GPT isn’t just for RV routes — it can plan hiking expeditions, scenic drives, or national park adventures. Give it a spin here:

🌲 Featured Blog: Hiking the New River Gorge with Kids

For the last two fall breaks, we’ve explored New River Gorge National Park, and it’s become one of our family’s favorites. The trails are beautiful but doable — especially compared to its steep and rocky neighbor, Shenandoah National Park.

If you’ve ever tried hiking Shenandoah with kids… you know. 🥵

In this week’s post, we’re sharing our favorite New River Gorge hikes, why they work great for families, and what makes this park such a hidden gem for young explorers.

🧠 AI Tip of the Week: Learn Better with Notebook LM

Let’s talk about school for a second. Jack’s math teacher (bless her heart) isn’t exactly winning Teacher of the Year. So we started experimenting with a free AI tool from Google called Notebook LM — and wow.

Here’s what it does:

  • You can upload articles, lesson notes, or URLs
  • It uses a large language model to summarize, teach, and create
  • You can generate:
    • 🎥 Explainer videos
    • 🎧 Audio lessons
    • 📝 Study guides
    • 🧩 Flashcards
    • 🧠 Even mind maps

It’s incredible for visual learners, kids who need extra help, or anyone trying to understand a new topic.

Check out the video we linked below — I walk through how it works step-by-step.

Hey Campfire Embers! I skipped last week’s newsletter. Part of it was simple — no new blog post. Part of it was even simpler — I didn’t feel like writing. 😅 And honestly? That’s probably a sign of what 2026 will look like for OCU. Less “must ship every week,” more every-other-week flow. I want these notes to feel useful, not forced. 🧠 75 Hard… Modified Before the new year, I mentioned Madeline and I were going all-in on 75 Hard. Reality check — we went with 75 Modified. Two 45-minute workouts...

Hey Campfire Embers! I hope 2025 was an amazing year for you and your crew. Madeline and I have been debating kicking off the year with 75 Hard. If you’re unfamiliar, it’s a stupid challenge that involves two 45-minute workouts a day (one outside…in January 😬), following an eating plan, reading 10 pages of non-fiction daily, no alcohol, and a few other “character-building” rules. Will we do the full thing? Probably not. Will we attempt some kind of modified, less-insane version? Very...

Hey Campfire Embers! Hey friend, I hope you’re winning in life right now. And if you’re reading this? You are winning. Period. We’re the lucky ones. Fortunate to be born in the USA. Fortunate to have options, freedom, and the ability to chase adventure. And this Christmas season, Sara and I have been sitting in that gratitude a little longer than usual. We hosted Christmas at our house this year — and here’s the win I didn’t see coming. Our basement is officially “gameafied.” Board games,...
